" Of all the projects ever pursued by the City of St. George, the Replacement Airport is undoubtedly the most satisfying to see under construction. Having overcome one major obstacle after another for nearly two decades, construction work is finally under way.
The Replacement Airport became necessary when larger commercial service and business aircraft began to operate or were expected to operate in the near future at the existing airport. Due to its constrained mesa top location the airport could not be expanded to safely accommodate them. Studies also revealed that continued use of the existing airport would result in missed economic and transportation benefits. The Replacement Airport also enabled passengers to enjoy direct flights to more distant locations. For these reasons the Mayor and City Council have been firmly committed to see this project through. Start of operations at the Replacement Airport is scheduled for January 1, 2011.
On May 7th @ 4:00 PM, the voting was unanimous for WESTLAND CONSTRUCTION, a local commercial general contracting firm from St. George. "

By Chance Walser

"It will take 95 phases and 455 days to complete the new terminal building.
From now until the beginning of July when construction will begin, there is plenty of paper work for westland construction's project manager, Barry Zeller to go through.
With plenty of curious southern Utah eyes on the project, Westland Construction has posted a virtual tour of the facility on their website.
From watching the footings go in to a look at the final landscaping, people can get a pretty good idea of where they will be flying out of and into come january 2011. "

Construction is wrapping up at new St. George airport
By Nadine Wimmer
ST. GEORGE -- The biggest construction project in St. George's
history is all but finished. The old airport sits on top of the bluff,
too small for a 747. The new airport is five times larger and can
accommodate commercial jets. That alone will please many
travelers.
St. George City Councilman Jon Pike explained, "There are a
number of people who, I think, for whatever reason, they can
be a little bit nervous about flying prop planes, so here we wil
have an opportunity to have a safer runway, and one where
you can land commercial jets." But city leaders say the primary
benefit for St. George residents isn't flights, but the promise of
higher paying jobs in their community.
"We think that by having the airport that Joe Blow citizen will have a chance, for either him or his kids that want to stay here, will have a job that will provide for their family," said St. George City Manager Gary Esplin.
With access to a commercial airport, St. George can now compete throughout the country for business.
Pike said, "One of the first things they ask for was ‘What is your air service like?' So we will have an opportunity with this airport to begin to have commercial jet service and that's going to be huge."
The entire project carries a $160 million price tag, and another $100 million for an expressway that connects to I-15.
The terminal itself may look a little bare but will be furnished with artwork.
The ribbon cutting and first flight out of the new terminal is scheduled for early January.
So what becomes of the old airport? City leaders will have to decide a mix of commercial and residential use. They know this is prime real estate sitting on top of a bluff.

After more than 20 years from vision to completion, the City of St. George is pleased to announce the dedication of the new St. George Municipal Airport on Wednesday, January 12, 2011.
St. George Mayor, Dan McArthur, the project's biggest advocate since its inception, said the dedication of the new airport is nothing short of a miracle, "When I think back to those early discussions with former city councils on the vision and need for a new airport it just seemed so far into the future. It's hard to believe but the future is finally here!"

The inaugural event begins at the Dixie Convention Center at 12:40 pm as part of the Washington County Economic Development Summit 2011 luncheon session. Local, state and federal elected officials and dignitaries will give brief presentations on the new airport. All luncheon attendees must be registered for the
Economic Summit. For details and registration information visit www.whatsupdownsouth.com. Following the session at 2:10 pm, the celebration ensues at the new St. George Municipal Airport, 4550 South Airport Parkway.
At 2:30 pm doors open at the new airport terminal building for an open house reception.
At 2:45 pm the dedication ceremony will begin inside the terminal. Following remarks from Mayor McArthur and City Manager, Gary S. Esplin, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a former airline pilot, will share some remarks and offer the dedicatory prayer. After the dedicatory prayer, a ribbon cutting will take place in the same location. Military jet aircraft and the new Intermountain Health Care Life Flight helicopter will be on display at the airport during the open house reception.
Due to the large number of expected attendees and limited space, the ceremony will be broadcast live on a series of projectors at the terminal building as well as live streaming video over the Internet via www.sgcity.org and on the Community Education Channel (20 Baja Broad Band, Washington County area).
SkyWest Airlines has graciously offered to provide a 50-passenger Bombardier-manufactured Canadair Regional Jet 200 (CRJ200) for the chartered inaugural flights to round out the dedication ceremony. Invited local, state and federal officials and dignitaries as well as eight individuals selected through Washington County area contests will participate in this event.
"The ongoing progress of Utah's Dixie has always been important to SkyWest, and the new airport is a great step forward for the community," said SkyWest Airlines President and COO, Chip Childs. "We're excited to celebrate the new airport with the city, and to bring superior air service from St. George to Salt Lake City and Los Angeles in 2011."
The open house reception will end at 6:00 pm. The open house reception and dedication ceremony are open and free to the general public.
